One controller for a growing smart home
A single smart bulb or plug may be easy to manage through its manufacturer's app. As sensors, thermostats and speakers join the setup, however, separate apps, scattered notifications and duplicated automations can make the home harder to coordinate. Devices using different technologies may also be unable to communicate directly.
Homey provides a central place to connect those devices and manage their routines. Rather than leaving each product to operate independently, it brings different brands and wireless technologies into a shared system.
Homey Pro treats Matter as a first-class smart home standard, providing fast, reliable local control. Its built-in Thread Border Router also lets Matter-over-Thread devices connect directly to it.
Matter support without abandoning older devices
Many hubs cover only one or two technologies: Matter without Zigbee, for example, or Zigbee without Thread. Others depend heavily on cloud services, which can affect speed and reliability. Homey Pro brings together Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 433 MHz and Infrared.
This range lets you combine devices according to their purpose rather than their protocol. A Thread-based Matter bulb such as the Aqara T2 can work alongside existing Zigbee sensors; a Z-Wave wall switch can join routines with a Wi-Fi coffee machine. A Shelly Smart Plug can respond immediately to presence detection in Homey.
The Homey Matter Bridge app extends this approach beyond Homey itself. It exposes many non-Matter devices, including Zigbee and Z-Wave sensors, to Matter apps such as Apple Home and Google Home. Existing devices can therefore participate in Matter ecosystems without being replaced.
That flexibility leaves room for a home to develop over time, whether Matter becomes the default, Zigbee remains a preferred choice for sensors, or new device categories emerge.
Build routines across brands and technologies
Homey's Flow system lets you combine devices in automations regardless of their brand or wireless standard. A Zigbee door sensor could trigger a Matter light when you arrive home. A Z-Wave wall switch could be part of a routine that shuts down the house when the last person leaves, or a Thread-based bulb could dim as the living room temperature rises.
Automation triggers can include presence, time, temperature, light, motion and energy use. The Flow editor supports basic WHEN-AND-THEN automations, while the Advanced Flows builder provides more powerful options for routines tailored to your home.
Keep the interfaces your household prefers
Not everyone wants to control a home in the same way. One person may prefer Apple's Siri, another Google Assistant, and another a single app. Matter's multi-admin support helps accommodate these preferences.
With the Homey Matter Bridge app, existing Zigbee, Z-Wave and other supported devices can appear as Matter devices in third-party ecosystems. Household members can use their preferred interfaces while Homey coordinates the devices behind the scenes. Homey also works alongside Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa.
Local control and room to expand
A hub is not essential for the first device, but it becomes more useful as the home grows. Homey can, in most cases, become the main place where devices connect and work together, reducing the need to manage separate systems.
Its emphasis on local control often improves speed and reliability. Local Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread and Matter devices continue operating without an internet connection.
Homey Pro can support large homes with many devices across multiple technologies, but a setup can also begin with just one or two devices. Native Zigbee and Z-Wave support, together with Matter and Thread, allows that setup to expand without committing to a single wireless standard or brand ecosystem.
